I was the sole SQL person at the law firm where I worked until my position was eliminated in September. The primary system I worked with was accounting/billing and had a small MS SQL Server 2000 database (15 gig). My primary duties are listed below and I'm seeking career suggestions and/or advice on possibly working towards a DBA role. MY EXPERIENCE: (1) Wrote and modified DTS package scripts for data warehouse; (2) Authored and modified basic Cognos Impromptu 7.3 reports (not cubes or PowerPlay or drill-down); (3) SQL scripts for ad hoc reporting (primarily with Excel); (4) Monitored 5-6 servers (MS SQL Server 2000); set up alerts and jobs (including backups) but no performance tuning or other tasks that I've seen listed in a typical DBA job description; (5) Configured and managed the data integration between the various SQL servers (accounting data as authoritative source); (6) Data conversion and import; (7) Team lead for implementation and administrator of WSS 3.0 SharePoint Intranet. I learned all of this technology on my own (on the job) and in many cases on a trial-by-fire basis. My income right now is only $320 per week in unemployment (ending soon), so I will need to keep my expenditures to a minimum. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you. Gracias.
